  17. <p>     An old saw says that "first comes love, then comes marriage,
  18. then comes pushing a baby carriage," but that idea appears to be
  19. out of style. According to a new Census Bureau report, fewer and
  20. fewer single women who become pregnant with their first child
  21. get married before the baby is born.
  22. </p>
  23. <p>     Analysts say the increase in out-of-wedlock births results
  24. in part from greater social acceptance of single motherhood.
  25. But other studies cite more dismaying factors: a shortage of
  26. men who earn enough to support a family and the high divorce
  27. rate. Many unwed mothers, says the Census Bureau, have come to
  28. believe that "they may be better off in the long run by relying
  29. more on the support of their parents and relatives...than
  30. by entering a potentially unstable marriage." But there is
  31. another problem: almost half of female-headed households live
  32. in poverty, compared with 8% of two-parent families.
